How to Install and Activate Office Professional Plus on Windows
Prepared by the MicrowinKey Editorial Team. Last reviewed against the Microsoft documentation linked in this guide.
Installing Office Professional Plus is usually straightforward when the installer, edition, version, bit type, and license channel all match. Most installation or activation problems begin when an existing Microsoft 365 or Office installation conflicts with the new product, or when a key is used with the wrong Office edition.
This guide explains how to check your Windows PC, remove conflicting Office installations, obtain the correct installer from a trusted source, activate Office, and verify the result. It applies to Office Professional Plus on Windows only. It does not apply to Office for Mac.
1. Check the version, edition, bit type, and license channel
Do not begin by entering a product key into whichever Office installation is already on the computer. A key for Office Professional Plus does not convert Office Home and Business, Office Home and Student, or Microsoft 365 into Professional Plus.
Open Word or Excel and select File > Account. Under Product Information, note the displayed product name. Then select About Word or About Excel to view the full version, build number, installation type, and 32-bit or 64-bit status. Microsoft documents these checks in its Office version identification guide.
You can also follow our Office version and compatibility checklist before installing or purchasing another product.
Choosing 32-bit or 64-bit Office
64-bit Office is generally suitable for large Excel workbooks, large data sets, and applications that need more memory. Some older COM add-ins, VBA integrations, controls, or specialized business applications may still require 32-bit Office. Check important add-ins before changing bit type.
Windows can be 64-bit while Office is 32-bit. However, 32-bit and 64-bit Office components normally cannot be mixed in the same installation. To change Office bit type, uninstall the existing Office installation first and then install the required version. See Microsoft’s 32-bit and 64-bit Office guidance.
Checking the license channel
The Office Account page does not always display every license-channel detail. Do not assume that every Professional Plus product uses the same activation process.
For volume-licensed Office, an administrator can use Microsoft’s read-only Office Software Protection Platform status command. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\root\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatusall
If 32-bit Office is installed on 64-bit Windows, the documented folder may instead be:
cd /d "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\root\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatusall
Some older installations omit the root folder. Never download a replacement script from an unknown site. This tool is for volume-licensed Office and does not apply to Microsoft 365 Apps. See Microsoft’s volume activation documentation.
2. Remove conflicting Office installations
Uninstall Office only when Microsoft 365, another edition, the wrong bit type, or remnants of a failed installation conflict with the required setup.
Before removal, back up important documents, custom templates, macros, Outlook archives, and add-in settings. Microsoft notes that uninstalling Office does not delete documents, but a separate backup is sensible.
- Close Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneNote, Project, Visio, and other Office applications.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the existing Microsoft 365 or Office suite and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows if requested.
- If the normal uninstall fails, use Microsoft’s official uninstall troubleshooter rather than a third-party cleanup utility.
Microsoft provides the supported removal methods on its Uninstall Office from a PC page.
3. Download Office from the correct source
Use the download route intended for the license you own. Microsoft distinguishes between consumer one-time purchases, account-based products, Workplace Discount Program products, and organization-managed volume licenses.
- A consumer product that must be associated with a Microsoft account may direct you to Office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup. After redemption, installation is normally managed through the associated Microsoft account.
- A Workplace Discount Program version of Office Professional Plus may use the product-key option shown inside the Office activation window.
- A volume-licensed Professional Plus or Office LTSC installation may require an organization administrator, the Office Deployment Tool, MAK, KMS, or Active Directory-based activation.
- If your delivery information does not clearly identify the appropriate route, contact MicrowinKey support before downloading or entering the key.
Do not obtain Office installers from torrents, file-sharing sites, link shorteners, pop-up advertisements, “pre-activated” packages, key generators, or unofficial activation tools. Do not disable antivirus protection merely because an unknown installer requests it.
Before choosing a version, compare Office 2021 and Office 2024 and review the Office 2021 support lifecycle.
4. Install Office Professional Plus
- Close other applications and confirm that Windows has enough free storage.
- Open the installer obtained through the correct official or organization-managed source.
- If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, check that the publisher and file are the ones you expected before selecting Yes.
- Allow setup to complete without starting a second installer.
- Restart the computer if Windows or the installer requests it.
- Open Word or Excel from the Windows Start menu.
5. Activate Office using the matching method
When Word or Excel opens for the first time, accept the Microsoft license terms and follow the activation prompt that corresponds to the product:
- For an account-associated product, sign in with the Microsoft account linked to that purchase.
- For an eligible product-key workflow, enter the key only on the Microsoft page or Office activation screen specified for that product.
- For an organization-managed MAK, KMS, Active Directory, or Office LTSC deployment, follow the administrator’s instructions.
Do not repeatedly redeem the same key through different Microsoft accounts or activation channels. A message that a key has already been used can mean that it was previously associated with an account and should now be installed by signing in to that account. Microsoft explains the supported routes in Activate Office for Windows and Where to enter an Office product key.
6. Verify that Office is activated correctly
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select File > Account.
- Confirm that Product Information shows the intended Office edition and an activated status.
- Select About Word and confirm the version and 32-bit or 64-bit status.
- If Update Options is available, select Update Now.
- Create, save, close, and reopen a test document to confirm normal operation.
Common installation and activation problems
The installed edition does not match the key
Check the exact name under File > Account. Office Home and Business, Home and Student, Microsoft 365, and Professional Plus are different products. Remove the mismatched installation and use the installer intended for the purchased edition.
A previous Office installation is still detected
Restart Windows after uninstalling. If remnants still block setup, use Microsoft’s official uninstall troubleshooter. Avoid registry-cleaning scripts or unknown activation cleanup tools.
Office installs but an application will not start
Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Office, choose Change, and try the repair option offered for that installation type. Microsoft documents Quick Repair and Online Repair in its Office repair guide.
Activation remains pending or unsuccessful
Check the exact edition, Windows date and time, internet connection, associated Microsoft account, and the activation method required for the license channel. Save the exact wording of the message instead of guessing from a similar error found online.
Do not disable security software, install a crack, alter licensing files, or run a script from an unofficial activation website. If the problem continues, contact support with the diagnostic information listed below.
This guide is not for Mac
Office Professional Plus is a Windows edition. A Windows Professional Plus installer or key should not be used to activate Office for Mac. Mac users should choose a product that explicitly states Mac compatibility or review the Microsoft Office product category and confirm the platform before ordering.
Delivery, activation support, and refunds
MicrowinKey delivers digital keys and order information to the checkout email and, where available, the customer account or order page—not through social platforms. See the Digital Delivery Policy.
If activation fails, contact customer support and provide:
- your order number and checkout email address;
- the purchased product and edition;
- your Windows version;
- the installed Office product name and bit type;
- the exact activation message and a screenshot that does not reveal the full key.
If the supplied key is the cause, MicrowinKey provides troubleshooting and replacements for the original eligible activation issue. If a working key ultimately cannot be provided after reasonable attempts, an eligible order is refunded under the Refund and Replacement Policy.
A genuine wrong-product purchase can be reviewed within seven calendar days after delivery if the key has not been activated, redeemed, disclosed, or used. A correctly ordered and delivered key is not eligible for a change-of-mind refund. Mandatory consumer rights remain unaffected.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Professional Plus key activate Home and Business or Microsoft 365?
No. The installed edition and activation method must match the purchased product. A product key does not convert one Office edition into another.
Is Office Professional Plus the same as Microsoft 365?
No. Microsoft 365 is generally an account-based subscription with continuing feature updates. Professional Plus is a distinct Office edition that may use a one-time, Workplace Discount Program, or organization-managed volume-license channel.
Can I use Office Professional Plus on a Mac?
No. This Professional Plus installation guide is for Windows. Choose a product whose page explicitly states Mac compatibility.
How many computers can I activate?
There is no universal answer for every Office product. Use only the number of devices stated on the product page, delivery information, and applicable Microsoft license terms.
What should I do if activation still fails?
Stop repeated activation attempts, record the exact message, verify the edition and license channel, and contact support with your order and system details. Never send your full product key, account password, or complete payment-card information.
Match the installation to the order
Installing for several Windows computers? Verify entitlement and edition separately on each device using the Office 2019 Professional Plus 5-PC checklist. Office 2019 has reached end of support; compare a newer release in the Office 2024 Professional Plus listing before a new deployment.
If Project is part of your workflow, review Project versions and compatibility before mixing Office and Project installations. For an activation failure, send your installed edition and error screenshot through MicrowinKey support; hide the full key.
